Primary Research

Primary Research October 02, 2017 What is your most popular magazine? -Vogue Why? -It is simply the biggest fashion magazine in the world right now, and so popular What is the least popular magazine you sell? -anything to do with sport why? -people into sport and athletics do not tend to read many magazines in your opinion what makes a good portrait cover? -provocation, artistic, something unique and out of the ordinary, clever use of colours and ideas in your opinion what makes a bad magazine cover? -poor use of colours and texts Advice to designers on magazine covers? -the cover is everything so a lot of work has to go into it -it has to have a strong image and purpose -it has to present it's message clearly -catchy, unique (same applies to the title) -make sure it's different and stands out Primary research is very important in the media because it shows you can get reliable information from the source. It allows the researcher at to get original informat...

Comparison of Primary and Secondary methods

There are two different types of research, one Primary and one Secondary. Primary being experience first hand by the person carrying out the investigation and secondary is where the researcher uses another source of information that does not belong to them. PRIMARY: Primary research can be collected via interviews, surveys and questionnaires. Or you can just use your own knowledge. Overall just collecting all information for a task by yourself or with a team mate. Unlike Secondary which uses other peoples opinions on the topic of research and not their knowledge. SECONDARY: Secondary research however uses other peoples information e.g books, internet, reviews etc. It is from a source that has already been researched by someone else.  Pros of secondary research: often obtained without cost Good overview of a market Usually based on actual sale figures, or research on large samples Cons of secondary research: Data may not be updated regularly Not ...

narrative theories: the heroes journey

Image
In todays lesson we each presented a presentation on each narrative theory, I will be talking about "The Heroes Journey" in this weeks blog.   Every story has a beginning, middle and end. At the beginning you introduce your hero/heroine. You see what there lifestyle is, what their hobbies are etc. They then have to face the first hurdle which will be where the storyline begins. A lot of bad things will come with this first hurdle that the protagonist (hero/heroine) will have to resolve.  The second hurdle is refusal. This will make the audience aware that the character is stubborn and not so confident. Their fears take over their natural instincts.  When the protagonist "meets the mentor", their whole perspective changes. With helpful guidance from another person will be the crucial turning point in the storyline or plot.  When the protagonist crosses the threshold, the hero is now ready to take action whether it be physical or mental.  The ...

The effect of sound in film

Image
In todays lesson we examined and tried out he technique of "foley". Foley is the reproduction of everyday sound effects added to a film, video or any other type of media. As a class, we watched a foley expert in his daily routine of how he creates the interesting yet common sounds.  He first went into a large room full of scrap materials such as metal, sand, weights etc. It is recorded and re-applied by a technician in a booth just outside the room. Step-by-Step he went through the process of how he manipulates the sound of certain objects.  We watched a scene from the critically acclaimed "Groundhog Day" where Bill Murray and Andie Macdowell are discussing a very important matter in the cafe, the sound effects start of very usual as there is dialogue and background sounds of dishes, cutlery and different types of dialogue. Then all of a sudden Murray has a short line which has great meaning behind it and the diegetic scene transitions into a non-diegetic scene....

My Silent Film

Today we started shooting for our silent film, the entire class watched several silent films starring Charlie Chaplin. So that sparked inspiration for all of us. As the film was silent, we had to add emphasis on certain aspects such as, the way that we portray comedic humour based on our facial expressions and body language.  By over exaggerating certain things we added over the top sound effects and music. The song used in the film was titled "fun in a bottle".  Our story line was based on a robbery of a ladies bag. We shot our first scene outside in direct sunlight so that we got the best natural lighting possible, then after the first four scenes we transitioned inside towards the staircase. shots used: zoom shots close ups extreme close ups long shots  point-of-view shot The staircase was a major part of the film as that was where the chase scene was located, we positioned the tripod in three different locations on the staircase so that we co...

The Fat Cat / Zero

Image
The Fat Cat: This animation was written and directed by "Mole Hill" they etched the drawings out of wax.  There is a very strong political message behind the story about greed and how "whatever fat cat wants it will get". The cat is symbolises the greed and selfishness in todays society and the government. The fat cat also takes food from the mice then eats them whole so maybe this depicts another symbol for the governments greed.  The narrator is speaking very bluntly and in simple grammar. ZERO: This is a 12 minute short film that was sweet and had a much needed message. It was created using non stop motion which included wool people.  the animators did a very good job of creating a large variety of characters.

Final "Brick" covers

Image
This is the most simple cover of "brick" that i have created, I made the font colour the same as my jumper so that the colours correlate and compliment each other. This isn't the best cover I have edited because it is not very intriguing to the eye. Yet I have done what i needed to improve by making the portrait and the muse the main focus of the cover. This is my favourite cover because the hot pink and royal blue really compliment each other. I have included as much colour as I think was needed, I lowered the contrast of the photo and made it a magenta hue.  I think this is a true representation of how i imagined my cover turning out.                                                                                                  ...

COLOURSSSSS

Image
With colours you can set a mood, attract attention, or make a statement. You can use color to energize, or to cool down. By selecting the right color scheme, you can create an ambiance of elegance, warmth or tranquility, or you can convey an image of playful youthfulness. Colour can be your most powerful design element if you learn to use it effectively. This is what we learnt in Mondays lesson.  For example colours are seen every where we look. Different colours have different affects on us. For example: Red is often perceived as a colour that symbolises dander and the only colour to raise our blood pressure by a significant amount. Blue on the other hand has a more calming effect.  Complimentary colour schemes: colours that are opposite each other on the colour wheel are considered to be complimentary for example: blue and orange. The high contrast of complementary colours creates a vibrant look especially when used at full saturation. This colour scheme must ...

Clay animation

We watched a short 7 minute film of a clay human making itself. The film was called "darkness light darkness" by Jan Svankmajer. The director used step by step animation to achieve this, it was shot inside what looked like a dollhouse and replicates a very strong allegory of the suffocating life in Eastern Europe. The human body often constructs itself using water based clay (which is the easiest to use for animations like this). Often it had to create weird and distorted shapes in order to work with the body parts it has until it is complete. At the very end of the film you see the clay body switch off the light in the room which to me symbolises that it is switching off the life inside it. What baffles me is that the audience never sees a heart be part of the process of making the body, sure we see the very realistic human brain being planted inside the head of the clay human and an extreme close up of the male genitalia but never the heart. I feel like this portrays how de...

short film

My idea for short animation film is to shoot a "Day in the life of a friend" drumming, waking up, eating etc. i feel like this would be a great idea as they are not very well known yet and it will help him to gain a little more popularity. I have come to the conclusion that a five minute film trailer would be very difficult to film in a short time span of a week as it includes editing, sound effects and 4 specific locations. I will still keep the same theme as i had with my original idea which was to keep the colour palette very neutral. for example: pastel colours keep the contrast very low    film indoors (preferably with natural light seeping in) I would prefer to do it in the daytime so that i do not have to use any artificial lighting. i would also like my friend to be wearing bright colours so that they would stand out within the neutral colours. I will use bursts on my IPHONE to make an effective animation. I also want it to be from my point of view. The mus...

Poster

Image
In todays lesson our task was to create a poster either about how students are not allowed to walk through the hive, an infographic that shows the students ambitions for the end of year one and finally a poster that illustrates the phrase "if you're late...wait!". I decided to design a poster on the effect it has on students concentration if multiple people are walking in and out of the hive. I have used a complimentary colour scheme of blue, yellow and orange.  I made the font two slightly different colours that compliment each other massively so that the writing will be the first aspect of the poster that the student sees. The background needs improvement as it is just plain white and needs slightly more colour. All together i feel that the ratio of writing to photos seems about accurate and i kept within the theme of a bee hive so it has a sense of humour to it. I added a meme to this poster also so that it appeals to a younger age range of about 16-20. I put a...

magazine week 3

Image
I have carried on with my 4 covers of BRICK magazine. I am making them all look different but i am still keeping the same pleasurable aesthetic. The colours that i have chosen to use are magenta, mint green, baby blue and tangerine. i have chosen these colours because they compliment each other in various different ways. I would prefer to take more photos next week and have them taken outside in a more natural light rather then artificial. For my 4 covers i took inspiration from magazine covers such as Wonderland, I.D and DAZED. Wonderland mostly. I decided to have an interesting yet plain border so that the photograph would stand out a lot more. i struggled a lot with trying to make them different from each other. i very desperately wanted to include aspects of nature and urban culture. i ended up including a mixture of both in my designs with the font being bold and bright and the background being neutral toned. For this cover i used the plastic beach font from the GORILLAZ al...
