Comparison of Primary and Secondary methods

There are two different types of research, one Primary and one Secondary. Primary being experience first hand by the person carrying out the investigation and secondary is where the researcher uses another source of information that does not belong to them.

PRIMARY:
  • Primary research can be collected via interviews, surveys and questionnaires. Or you can just use your own knowledge. Overall just collecting all information for a task by yourself or with a team mate. Unlike Secondary which uses other peoples opinions on the topic of research and not their knowledge.
SECONDARY:
  • Secondary research however uses other peoples information e.g books, internet, reviews etc. It is from a source that has already been researched by someone else.

Pros of secondary research:

  • often obtained without cost
  • Good overview of a market
  • Usually based on actual sale figures, or research on large samples
Cons of secondary research:

  • Data may not be updated regularly
  • Not tailored to your own needs
  • Expensive to buy reports on many different market places
pros of primary research:

  • Can aim questions directly at your research objective
  • Latest information from the market place
Cons of primary research:
  • Expensive +£10,00+ per survey
  • Risk of questionnaire and interview bias
