Editing research and analysation

For my film, I really want to use the "washed out" or "milky" cinematography that you see in movies nowadays and back in the 60's and 70's. It includes very high contrasted shots and focuses on certain colours in the scene. I've always liked the idea of having a very atmospheric film but including brightly coloured titles to add more of a grounding effect. In the photo bellow, there seems to be a very high contrast with four star colours include brown, white, blue and silver. They compliment each other well as they are in the  tetradic colour scheme which means that there is a balance of rich and cool tones. For my film the key themes are Youth, Beauty, Relaxation and Nature. The colours that represent those four are orange, pink, blue and green. They are all in the tetradic colour scheme.

Films that have inspired me:
I have linked them in various documents and blogs on my brief but I will explain what aspect of them that I want to re-create for my mockumentary.

This French Yogurt commercial is very striking, It is listing the small pleasures that come from her everyday life as she is doing them, I want to use a voice over over my scenes of my actress going about her daily life.

For my talking heads scene I really want to use a very simplistic B&W effect. This is so that the audience won't take too much interest in the relatives and focus more on the teen. This is a link to the W Magazine screen tests. The original reason why I wanted these scenes in black and white is because I want to show how dull and lifeless the adults are compared to Kitty who is full of energy and life.

Having these scenes in black and white focuses the audience on the script rather than the colours on the screen. All too often colour can be a big distraction, overall I think that it can convey the point of the story a lot more than if it was in colour.

Cinematography wise I really enjoy Vance joy's "riptide" due to the fast scene changes and the panning shots I also love Lamadelynn's "This is Madelynn" because it has a foreign voice over and the colour scheme is very pleasing as well as the music video.
The clothing is also very scenic in the two videos also.

LaMadelynn has also done 2 short 35mm films with the milky cinematography as well, I used screen shots of the film "Something Sweet" in my story board.

To achieve the washed out look I will have to:

  • Use a tint affect in Premiere Pro, and desaturate it to 25%.
  • Add curves to colour correct, use the master tool to up the contrast. This washes out the clip so the colour is very light.
  • I will then tint the clip if I have too.

Font Research:
For my ending credits, opening title sequence and subtitles, I want the font to be aesthetically pleasing. I would like it to be in yellow with a black boarder around it so that it would be easier to see in scenes with higher contrast. Preferably, I want the font for the title sequence to be different to the one for the ending credits and subtitles as it would be nice if the title would stand out slightly more.
