linear and non linear films
linear film:
A Linear film would have a beginning, middle and end in chronological order. A classic example of this would be a film such as "sixteen candles". At the very beginning of the John Hughes movie, we see a normal family having a difficult morning as the eldest is about to wed. skipping to the middle, the main protagonist (Molly Ringwald) is unsatisfied about a boy (Jake). Yet we see his perspective of the story along with farmer Teds.
Non Linear:
A great example of a non linear film would be inception as there is no set time frame for most of the scenes as the film starts with the ending and moves in and out of dream sequences.
Structure:
Most films follow the three act structure which is a beginning, middle and end. It is also split into three acts starting withe the introduction of the plot and the protagonist. During act 2 the action starts to rise and it introduces confrontation obstacles also start to rise during the second act as the protagonist comes to a tricky decision. Act 3 is then the crisis and resolution.
Family dinner (short film):
On Dipict.org there is a ninety second film titled "family dinner". In the short film the camera is in a constant pan shot viewing a pairing of each member of the family talking about different subjects. When it goes to the brother and sister they start talking about the definition of "Gay", act one ends with the mother and her father talking about reading online. As the camera comes full circle of the family Act 2 starts where it began. Whilst all of the other family members are on a different topic, the brother and sister are still in disagreement on the term "Gay" as the brother thinks that the term applies to both the sexes. The sister then interrupts the mother and her father by shouting, "Can you please tell him that he is NOT GAY!!!" this is the tipping point of Act 2 when the mum says something about kissing. At that point the camera starts to turn to go back to the beginning of the table when the brother says "well Sophie must be Gay too." Act 3 then starts with the brother explaining how he saw his sister kissing a boy when she was baby sitting him. The short ends with the sister slapping her brother in the back of the head.
