Triptychs week 2

Image
Last lesson I went into the studio next door to our classroom to test out the lighting that i was going to use for my triptychs. I decided that i wanted a cool tone the reflects sadness and isolation. For the fill light I used a blue tinted gel. I left the Key light white and tuned down the brightness to around half way. I didn't use a back light... (which was a mistake). As a result of this, the photos came out very dark and i really struggled to get the correct exposure on the camera. Before i am about to take the polaroids i will use a normal camera to get the correct brightness and lighting to make sure that i don't waste precious film.    For my actual Triptychs I was thinking about using a polaroid camera instead of a modern Canon camera so that it filters the contrast. I would still like to experiment different gel colours on the fill light so that i can get a contrast of 2 different colours.  For my triptychs, i have decided to take a full body portrait...

lookbook idea

Image
Today in Nick's lesson we went out in groups of 4 or 5 to different shops to gather look books and catalogs to give us inspiration for our magazines.  I have decided to create a look book about: If onscreen series and films were people. This that i have decided to include in my look book. Polyvores Make-up Music (soundtrack) photography shoes  jewellery  clothing/style  I have taken inspiration from magazines such as "Dazed" and "wonderland" for the overall atmosphere of the look book. I would really like to take some disposable photographs to include a photography aspect in my look book. I am using my friends Kitty and Holly as models.  The films/series i have decided to base my look book on are: Beetlejuice Stranger Things  Romeo + Juliet The Life Aquatic Dazed and Confused  For the cover of my look book I will conduct my research on youtube and look a the thumbnails of some look book videos so that can get a cle...

exploration in photoshop

Making my idea of the "Brick" magazine come to life, I took inspiration from certain magazines like dazed and confused or ID to give myself a basic idea of how it would turn out. I also got inspiration from st Vincent's album art from her latest album "massseduction". The album includes lots of bold pinks, reds and blacks put together on a bright background to give a balanced contrast. I experimented with keeping to two colours for one of my covers of Brick, Electric Blue and Hot Pink. During one of the lessons with nick a group of us went to town to find block colour backgrounds so that we could play with different colours without there being too much going on in the photograph. Lily, Willow and I went towards Avon street carpark and found a blank wall we could take portraits against. On that specific day I wore a blue/grey sweatshirt which made me think of the complimentary colour scheme. To add a pink tint to the photo, I used the brush tool to tint the...

SECONDARY RESEARCH

Secondary research is a certain type of research that has originally been explored by another company/figure. Secondary research can be in the form of a book, website or any online source and documentations. When conducting research on my review for "Arrival", I looked at online websites such as IMDB, Youtube and flickering myth . Flickering Myth: The review itself: " With  Arrival , Dennis Villeneuve has managed to pull off that rare trick of creating a sci-fi ‘event’ movie that is both epic in scale and cerebral in depth. Concentrating on the finer details of linguistic research and mathematical probability equations rather than the smash and grab of space conflict, this is a work that aims high and keeps on climbing. Containing discernible elements of Villeneuve’s previous work – particularly the political other-worldliness of  Incendies  and the fragmented identity tension of  Enemy  – there is a grandeur about this production that fits the big themes o...

Early Cinema

Image
For centuries the only visual standard of narrative story telling was theatre.  Since the first narrative films in the 1890s, film makers thought to capture the power of live theatre on the cinema screen. Due to the limits of technology, films during that time period were often under a minute long. Also up until 1927 motion pictures were often produced without sound.   The first rotating camera for taking  panning shots  was built in 1898.  The first use of animation in movies was in 1899.  Special effects were introduced involving action moving from one sequence into another. In the 1900s, continuity of action across successive shots was achieved and the first close-up shot was introduced.  Comedic Humour: To make up for the fact that film in early cinema was silent, the actors would often over exaggerate body language and facial expressions. Effects on the early films: Black & White Silent  Comedic humour subtitle...

linear and non linear films

Image
linear film: A Linear film would have a beginning, middle and end in chronological order. A classic example of this would be a film such as "sixteen candles". At the very beginning of the John Hughes movie, we see a normal family having a difficult morning as the eldest is about to wed. skipping to the middle, the main protagonist (Molly Ringwald) is unsatisfied about a boy (Jake). Yet we see his perspective of the story along with farmer Teds.           Non Linear: A great example of a non linear film would be inception as there is no set time frame for most of the scenes as the film starts with the ending and moves in and out of dream sequences. Structure: Most films follow the three act structure which is a beginning, middle and end. It is also split into three acts starting withe the introduction of the plot and the protagonist. During act 2 the action starts to rise and it introduces confrontation obstacles also...

short animations

Sherm: Sherm the worm is a short animation using plasticine and claymation. The narrator (the worm) informs the public about certain issues such as using electricity when it is not needed, not to charge your phone over night because it wastes electricity and brushing your teeth. I feel like the film doesn't have many faults yet the camera man/women has not bolted the camera down to the tripod which resulted in some camera jerks. Overall I thought that it was informative, yet made some mistakes when it came to the correlation of all the information. The bright pink colour of the clay however stood out in front of the mainly white background. How will you Die?: The second animation titled "How will you die" uses more of a cartoon like animation and is also a lot more advanced then the first animation, this animation is targeted towards mostly young adults. The animation flowed and continued a lot better the "Sherm" as the makers were able to due to the more ...

Triptych week 1

Image
TRIPTYCH I  have decided to make a triptych for my project, i've taken inspiration from portraits in particular. For my Triptychs I would  prefer them to be portraiture. I would like to focus on slightly bolder colours then not. Down bellow, I have some different options that I can experiment with. To present my triptychs I would either have them landscape or portrait, preferably i would like to use a bold background to present them on that also goes with the colour scheme.  I would prefer to have the photoshoot indoors because it is easier to manipulate the light. In terms of the camera itself I would like to experiment with disposables and 35mm because the photos will be of better quality then the would on an iPhone. Even though the quality on a disposable camera will be a bit more pixilated then a normal camera, it goes with the theme i am gravitating towards.       I love the light pink against the slightly darker con...

Female Representation in the Media

Women in film: We have seen over the past few decades that women are very poorly represented in film and hollywood. The Bechdel test was created by Alison Bechdel in 1985 to test the oppression of women in films. The films had to answer yes to these 3 questions: Are there at least two women with names? Do they talk to each other? Do they talk about something other than a man? Films that did not pass the Bechdel test include: Breakfast at Tiffany's Run Lola Run (500) days of Summer The "Star Wars" trilogy The Social Network The Little mermaid In 2016 alone, 4% of directors were women on the top 100 films, In the top 100 films, women represented 29% of all sole protagonists and 76% of all female characters in the top 100 films were white. 14% of all female characters were black, 6% were Asian American, and 3% were Latina. https://womenandhollywood.com/resources/statistics/2016-statistics/ Actress Geena Davis, (known for films such as “Beetlej...
