Findings blog

These are my 8 research techniques (primary and secondary). Down bellow I will list the reasons why they helped me and the ideas that I have had since conducting the research.

  • Film posters
  • Editing experimentation
  • Technique research
  • Mockumentaries
  • Book analysis
  • Vox Pop
  • Music analysis
  • survey and review
Film Posters:
By researching different film posters from the 70's and 80's, it has helped me in designing my own concept art/film poster for the mockumentary. I want my poster to reflect purity, youth and kindness which is why I will stick to three main colour schemes, Orange, pink and blue. For the image itself, I want it to be in black and white with the title and tagline in different colours. Certain magazines have inspired me (image wise) for my poster as most of the photos are very clean and raw which, to me suggests that they are uncovering the truth and that intrigues the reader to look inside the magazine and thats exactly what I want with my film.

Editing Experimentation:
When I did research on how to get the very washed-out 70's inspired look I watched a lot of videos and tutorials on youtube. One youtuber that I really took an interest in is "LaMadelynn". Her videos are very sweet and also, she obviously takes an interest in the very 70's inspired look as all her videos are very washed out and have a slightly blue tint to them. I contacted her on Instagram yet I still haven't had a reply :(. I also delved into the screen tests that W magazine posted on their youtube channel, I will be taking inspiration from them as all the models/muses were face on just talking to the camera. I will be using that for my talking heads scene at the beginning of the film.

Technique Research:
When I will be filming, I will need as much sunlight as possible as it is set in the summer. I also found a tutorial on youtube explaining you to achieve this sort of look yet I will need to download another software as well. In the end, I want the entire film to be attractive to the human eye and I think adding a filter will help to achieve this. I also took this technique to the test and I edited footage that I used for previous productions.

Mockumentary Analysis:
For my analysis on different mockumentaries, I chose to research "This Country" and the UK version of "The Office". I explained what sound effects are included in both of the shows, the camera angles and the locations. I then applied all of those factors to the development of my film and planned out how I can make my film look like a mockumentary without taking out all the hand held shots, sound effects etc. I also talked about theories.

Book analysis:
For my book analysis I decided to research different styles of cinematography, the cinematographer that I decided to research was Ed Lachman, he did the cinematography for films such as "The Virgin Suicides" and "Erin Brockavich". In the book they had interviewed Ed on the film that he used to shoot "The Virgin Suicides". He mentioned that the director of the film (Sofia Coppola) was inspired by classic the 70's film "Badlands". I then wrote down my thoughts on the subject of the "70's" look and that in able to achieve it, I would have to hire a film camera instead of using a modern day digital camera.

Vox Pop:
Last week, me and my assistant director headed out into Bath to seek a diverse demographic to ask questions based on stereotyping teenagers and people all together. We asked approximately 5-7 people of different ages and genders and overall got mixed and positive responses. Lily also asked a few questions on what people think that teenagers do in the summer.

Music Analysis:
When I did my music analysis I kept two things in mind, Non-Diegetic and Diegetic music/sounds. I talked about how it added tension to a scene or lightened the mood of the scene. I also mention some stuff about legislation and how I will not need permission due to the fact that my social status isn't very large. I listed some French songs that were lyrical and instrumental and I had said why I chose them. I also said that I will add coming of age music to set the tone of the film.

Survey and Reflection:
For my survey and reflection, I explained how I conducted a part of my Primary Research by making a survey on teenage stereotypes and the film style I was planning on shooting. I went through each question in the survey and wrote the highest and lowest statistics. I also described why people of varying ages answered differently to each other.
